NSU Ro80 (1972)

A revolutionary that became an orphan. The first mass produced Rotary engine was full of promise when it came out in 1967 but initial problems with compression followed by the oil crisis of the early 70s signalled the end, despite a takeover of NSU by Audi. Mazda continued the Wankel engines with a certain success though high consumption and reliability problems have finished it off recently, at least for the time being. The Ro80 remains nevertheless revolutionary by its shape, its engine and also its semi automatic hand operated clutch on the gearstick. A delight to drive once it has been started !

Un révolutionnaire devenu orphelin. Il y avait plein d’espoir quand ce premier moteur rotatif en production de série est sorti en 1967 mais les problèmes au début avec l’étanchéité suivi de la crise du pétrole des années 70s ont condamné la voiture, malgré le rachat par Audi. Mazda continuait avec les moteurs Wankel, avec un certain succès mais la consommation considérable ainsi que les problèmes de fiabilité ont achevé sa production. La Ro80 reste néanmoins révolutionnaire pour son époque, de par sa forme, son moteur et aussi son embrayage pneumatique contrôlé depuis le levier de vitesses. Un plaisir à conduire, une fois démarrée.
